The bug that kept Daidai in bed ended on a Thursday. That same morning a letter arrived. Despite all that had gone wrong in Japan, its postmark indicated that it had found its way to Southern California in under a week.

Inspecting the envelope carefully before opening it, Daidai believed at first that the note had come from Satsuki, though she couldn’t understand why it had been sent the day before she’d left Mito. Shielding her eyes from the glare hitting the row of metal postboxes, she read the address line again to verify that the envelope had actually been addressed to her. Perhaps it had been delivered to the wrong mailbox. It was 70 degrees out that morning and perfectly sunny, but a shiver ran up her spine and her hands trembled, contributing a layer of unpleasantness all their own.

Daidai [she recognized her name, printed in kana];

I welcomed you into my home when Satsuki invite you to return with her to Mito. I hope you enjoyed to visit Japan. Now I like to remind you how good reputation takes years to build. I cannot hope to control what you do. This decision must belong to yours, but I would ask you to consider that the truth might be different from what you think. Satsuki might have made mistake to discuss things that are none of her business. However, I still wish to protect my daughter and would ask you to think of her when I say that I believe it would be a mistake to go to police.
